It is commonly associated with multiple sclerosis (MS), where it is considered one of the first symptoms of the disease, but it can also occur independently or in conjunction with other conditions like neuromyelitis optica or infections. The exact cause of optic neuritis is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve an autoimmune response where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the optic nerve, leading to inflammation and damage. Symptoms of optic neuritis typically include blurred vision, loss of color vision, and pain, particularly when moving the eye. Some individuals may also experience a temporary worsening of vision, known as Uhthoff's phenomenon, which is triggered by heat or exercise. Treatment for optic neuritis primarily focuses on reducing inflammation and managing symptoms.
